SYLLABUS

 

Welcome to 8th-grade Advanced Placement United States History!  

I hope that you will find this class interesting, informative-- and fun!  

You will be working very hard to develop new skills and understand new concepts this year. 

 I strongly believe in challenging students through a variety of activities that will make history "come alive".  

This syllabus will give you information about how to become a productive member of my classroom so that you become your very best by doing your very best.  

I'm looking forward to a successful and exciting new year.

 

Course Description

The focus of this class will be from the American Revolution thru the Civil War and Reconstruction Era.  This will include a study of the Constitution and Citizenship.  This class will introduce you to people, places, ideas, and events that shaped America.  There will be an emphasis on historical thinking and the use of primary sources. These topics will be pursued through a chronological study focusing on literacy skills and Social Studies processes.

 

Objectives

Students will examine in greater depth the factors, events, documents, significant individuals, and political ideas that led to the formation of the United States of America. Students will pursue these through a chronological study of the nation's beginnings to 1877. Students will also focus on citizenship skills with a focus upon the historic development and understanding of our constitutional government in the United States. The student will continue to develop and put to use a variety of Social Studies Process and Literacy Skills to help them gain a better understanding of our nation’s history and the workings of a Republican Government. 

 

Assignments

 

Daily Bell Ringers - Student will complete daily bell ringers.

Lecture - The teacher will present through Google Slides.

Notes - Daily notes will be taken.

Quizzes - Quizzes over sections and chapters will be given

Activities - writing assignments, mapping assignments, and digital assignments will be given.

Digital Interactive Notebook - A template will be provided. 

Reading - Students will receive book reading assignments.

Writing and Research - Students will be required to do a research paper.

Videos and Movies - Videos and Movies will be used to reinforce student learning. 

Grading Scale

100-90 A

89-80 B

79-70 C

69-60 D

59-0 F

Assignments/Homework/ Late Work

Assignments will be a mixture of paper & Google Classroom assignments. All assignments are due the next day unless otherwise specified. Students will be given 6 opportunities each semester to turn in late assignments with no penalty. They will need to complete a Google Form prior to the late assignments being graded. After the student has used all 6 passes in a semester, 20% penalty will be given to all further late assignments.

Course Description

This class is an exploration into the birth and development of America with a special focus on the geography, economy, government, military, foreign affairs and the people who helped to shape the new nation.  The class will look into the Age of Exploration during the 1400s, Colonial America and the events that lead to revolution and independence from Great Britain.  Students will examine life after the American Revolution and the creation of the United States Constitution and the major debates that helped to shape the young Republic.  Students will study Westward Expansion and the effects it had on Native Americans, the land, and other nations.   We will look at the causes and main events that lead to the American Civil War.  Students will study the complex issues connected to American Reconstruction.  Students will comprehend the economic and social factors that contribute to American Industrialization.
